A 105-year-old woman who lived through both world wars has revealed her secret to longevity was to say single.

The retired nurse, Brenda Osborne, was born in 1913, and has shared her tips with carers at her retirement home during her 105th birthday party.

She revealed to them that she made it to 105 by steering well clear of blokes, getting out in the fresh air, and working hard.

Brenda was born in the same year as the first ever Chelsea Flower Show, and has received an award for only having one day off sick in 33 years as a nurse.

She lived in her childhood home for an amazing 93 years before she moved to her current home in the nursing home at the age of 104.

Brenda said:

I would put my good health down to hard work and avoiding men.

I loved celebrating my birthday although I was disappointed the Queen didn’t come. I received my letter from her but I thought an appearance was the least she could do.

Amazing. We need more people in this world like Brenda.

People Will Go To Bizarre Lengths To Combat Their Dog’s Bad Breath, Research Finds

Anyone who’s owned a dog will know just how bad their breath smells, especially when they decide to yawn right in your face.

It’s so bad, people are now going to bizarre lengths in an attempt to stop their dog’s breath from smelling, research has found.

Chewing gum, facial hair-cuts and brushing their teeth with human toothpaste are just some of the ways dog owners are trying to combat their dog’s bad breath, according to a recent study.

Giving dogs snacks which are said to ‘improve’ their breath, handing them fresh mint leaves to chew, and keeping the lid closed so your hound doesn’t drink from the toilet are other ways to ensure your four-legged-friend’s mouth doesn’t stink.

The survey of 2,000 dog owners revealed over half believe their dog suffers from bad breath – and yet the same percentage think this is normal for canines, when it can actually be a symptom of poor dental health.

Only a fifth of those polled would worry about dog breath being a sign of a serious health problem. However, six in 10 owners admitted to having tried to combat their dog’s bad breath, and over half have used a dental chew to do this.

Rodney Zasman, a leading London veterinary surgeon, said:

A lot of dog owners aren’t aware of how important it is to look after their dog’s dental health. Poor care of dogs’ dental hygiene can result in implications such as dental plaque, gum disease, tooth abscesses and difficulty eating .

Bacteria can spread from the teeth and gums causing damage to the kidneys, liver and the heart. Painful and extensive dental surgery and treatment may be needed to cure this.

It’s vital to increase owners’ knowledge of the importance of looking after their dog’s teeth and gums to ensure pets are as healthy and fit as possible.

While dogs have been fed anything from cooked parsley, carrots, apples and mints in a bid to keep their breath fresh, nearly a third of owners polled didn’t know how often they need to clean their dog’s teeth.

The survey, commissioned by Lily’s Kitchen pet food via OnePoll.com to coincide with the launch of Woofbrush, their new natural dental chews, found only one in 10 dog owners have ever taken their dog to the vet because of their bad breath.

More owners thought dogs’ bad breath is associated with what their dog has eaten rather than a sign of poor dental hygiene.

And although dogs are known to be man’s best friend, three in 10 owners admitted to avoiding going near their canine companion because of their terrible breath. A more confident 40 per cent however will let their dog lick their face regardless of how bad they smell.

I’ll be honest with you, I once made the mistake of giving my dog one of my sour cream Pringles; he then proceeded to jump up on me and breathe right in my face. Never again.

The survey results revealed dog owners have spent on average less than £100 on their dog’s dental hygiene since having them, indicating owners are underestimating the importance of dental health compared to other areas of physical condition.

And people aren’t making the connection between poor dental health and the implications it can have on their dog’s overall health. Under half of those dog owners who were polled said they take their dog for an annual dental inspection.

Those owners who do care for their canine’s teeth believed dental chews are an effective solution, with six in 10 using them to combat their dog’s breath.

Henrietta Morrison of Lily’s Kitchen, said that most dental chews are not the solution:

Keeping your dog’s teeth in really good condition is part and parcel of being a responsible pet owner. The best time to get your pet used to you brushing their teeth is from when they’re puppies.

Dental disease is so avoidable and when it does happen it can be devastating for the entire health of your pet, as bacteria from teeth spreads throughout the immune system, not to mention the added impact of terrible doggy breath.

As with so many pet products, it’s very hard to work out what’s best for your pet. Almost all pet dental chews are made with nasty ingredients including sugar and chemicals.

Who knew? I’d better go and buy my dog a toothbrush then, here’s hoping he doesn’t bite my hand off…

A brave 5-year-old boy who was battling cancer apologised to his mum before dying in her arms.

Charlie Proctor, from Accrington, Lancashire, was diagnosed with a rare tumour in 2016 which required him to have a liver transplant.

Charlie’s parents, Amber Schofeld and Ben Proctor, launched an appeal to raise £855,580, which would go towards Charlie having an operation in the US.

They shared their son’s story in an emotional post on Facebook in October, writing:

I’m absolutely heartbroken to have to write this post. Myself and Charlie’s Daddy decided to keep this to ourselves until after the holiday. This last week has been spent telling family, friends and them having their time with Charlie.

Now that ourselves and family have had some time to try and deal with this, it’s time we share with you…. The week before our holiday we spoke with Charlie’s consultant. His cancer is growing faster than we expected in both his liver and lungs.

How can a parent, who’s already planning the last few months of their child’s life, feel any worse?.. by hearing the words.. “He has 4-6 weeks of life left”. That’s how.

This was nearly 4 week ago. Charlie has 2weeks left to breath, 14 days to see the world, 336 hours to spend with his little sister, his baby sister he won’t get to see grow. [sic]

On Friday (November 9), Charlie passed away. His parents shared the devastating news on Saturday (November 10), including a picture of the young boy with angel wings.

The post read:

Last night at 23:14 my best friend, my world, Charlie, took his final breath. He fell asleep peacefully cuddled in my arms with daddy’s arms wrapped around us. Our hearts are aching. The world has lost an incredible little boy.

Charlie, you gave me chance to be a mum. You have been, not only our biggest inspiration but you have been an inspiration to thousands of people all over the world. You showed me what love really means Charlie. Now it’s time to fly, I am so, so proud of you.

You fought this so hard. My baby, I’m hurting so much. I will forever miss you baby bum. Sweet dreams my baby.

This will be the last photo I post of Charlie. As the days go by he deteriorates more and more. He no longer looks like…

In a post shared just one day earlier, Amber explained how her brave son had apologised to her ahead of his death, saying ‘Mummy, I’m so sorry for this’.

She explained:

I want everyone to remember Charlie for who he is. I want them to remember how he looked, how cheeky he was, how hilarious, how grumpy he was because right now Charlie isn’t any of those. He’s sad, he’s tired, he’s fed up and depressed.

“I don’t know what to do anymore” are his main words.. today, he’s been very agitated, wanting to lay down, sit up, lay in bed, then on the beanbag, then on the sofa, then back upstairs and so on…

charlie, at one point, turned to me and said in the most quiet, panting voice, ”Mummy, I’m so sorry for this” he was sorry because he wanted to move again and he felt he had to apologise for that? [sic]

Michael J Fox Reunites With Christopher Lloyd On Red Carpet In Back To The Future Reunion

Great Scott! Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd were together again in a Back To The Future reunion.

Well, for all we know they could have just zipped to the red carpet from 1985, 1955, 2015 or even 1885. Those two have been all over the place in time.

Let’s hope they’ve not disrupted the continuum.

The two actors appeared at The Michael J. Fox Foundation’s annual gala in New York City, which raises money in the search for a cure for Parkinson’s.

Fox was diagnosed with the neurodegenerative disorder in 1991, and the foundation was set up in 2000. The website explains since 2000, The Michael J. Fox Foundation has funded more than $800 million of research into a cure for Parkinson’s disease.

It adds:

The Michael J. Fox Foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Parkinson’s disease through an aggressively funded research agenda and to ensuring the development of improved therapies for those living with Parkinson’s today.

Lloyd shared his support for his co-star in a picture on Instagram, which he captioned:

For almost 20 years, my dear friend Michael and his @teamfoxmjff foundation has lead the way in research for Parkinson’s disease, the second most common brain disease after Alzheimer’s.

In total, they have funded over $800 million in research to create greater access to proper drug treatment and ultimately find a cure. Please find all the info on the foundation in my bio and HELP if you can!

The gala often attracts celebrity guests, and this year rock star Joan Jett took to the stage and played electric guitar alongside Fox, no doubt impressing guests in the same way Marty McFly wowed his audience with his 1955 rendition of Johnny B. Goode.

The 52-year-old thanked the guests who had attended the ‘A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s’ event with a series of pictures on his Instagram.

He wrote:

Gala time again, what an amazing night! So many friends came out to play.
Thank you all!

This isn’t the first time Fox and Lloyd have reunited; the pair also met up with Marty’s mum Lorraine, played by Lea Thompson, and nemesis Biff Tannen, aka Thomas Wilson, back in August.

Lloyd shared the epic snap on Instagram, writing ‘this was special’:

Unfortunately the DeLorean was nowhere to be seen – though that’s not to say it wasn’t hidden in a cave somewhere.

Amazing!
