CORONATION Street’s Robert Preston ends up in hospital after being knocked down by a van– and is then forced to deal with a shocking health issue.
Robert sees Chesney’s son Joseph and Izzy’s son Jake running in the road – and straight into the path of the Bistro van. He springs into action, but is mowed down by the vehicle – and smashes his head on the cobbles.
Robert ends up in hospital, where girlfriend Michelle – played by Kym Marsh – then nags him to deal with the lump they discovered while in bed together recently – but he’s too scared.
Tristan Gemmill, who plays Robert, told Inside Soap: “It’s Robert’s worst nightmare. Everything he’s fought for, like his business and his relationship with Michelle, could be taken away – and the thought of that is terrifying.
“He’s scared to the point of being frozen with fear, and that’s why he doesn’t want to talk to anyone or do anything about it.”
Earlier in the week, Michelle finds out from Daniel (Rob Mallard) that Robert skipped a doctor’s appointment to get his lump checked out. However, Robert tells Michelle he has groin strain and is adamant it’s nothing to worry about.
When Robert ends up in A&E after being hit by the Bistro van, he confesses to Michelle that he’s been aware of the lump in his testes for a number of weeks. Michelle sees his hospital stay as an opportunity for Robert to get things checked out – and calls in the urologist.
Tristan adds: “Michelle uses the time in which he is immobilised to get the urologist in. Even though he feels backed into a corner, Robert reluctantly agrees to an examination.
“The doctor says there is definitely something that needs to be investigated further, so he recommends that Robert has a scan immediately.”
Robert then gets the news he’s been dreading as the consultant tells him he will need to have an operation to have his testicle removed.
Tristan says his character doesn’t deal very well with the diagnosis.
He said: “Robert feels that everything is getting out of hand and that is troubling for him as he likes to be in control.
“He basically says to the doctor, ‘Thank you for making me aware of this – I’ll think about it’. But then he just wants to get out of the door.
However, Rob copes with his diagnosis by hitting up the local casino – where he loses a fortune playing poker.

Tests on volunteers found it increased the use of genes, enzymes and proteins which boost their metabolism.
Professor Jun Wu, of the Life Sciences Institute at Michigan University in the US, said: “Cinnamon has been part of our diets for thousands of years – and people generally enjoy it.
“So if it can help protect against obesity, too, it may offer an approach to metabolic health that is easier for patients to adhere to.”
She said as it’s already used widely in food it might be easier to convince patients to stick to a cinnamon-based treatment than to a traditional medicine.
The health benefits of cinnamon are no excuse for over indulging in egg-nog or mulled wine this Christmas[/caption]
But she warned against winter revellers loading their egg-nog or mulled wine with extra cinnamon to keep the Christmas pounds at bay.
Prof Wu said further studies are needed to determine how best to harness cinnamaldehyde’s metabolic benefits – without causing adverse side effects.
The spice has already been linked to reducing the risk of diabetes, cutting cholesterol, relieving symptoms of Alzheimer’s and staving off heart disease and cancer.
Cinnamaldehyde is the active compound in cinnamon – and is also responsible for the flavour that lifts dishes, mainly desserts.

The household ingredient could also aid those with Parkinson’s disease. Scientists said in 2014 the spice is the source of a chemical that can protect the brain.
Livers convert cinnamon into sodium benzoate – an approved drug used in the treatment for brain disorders.
In a study of mice the found it enters the brain, stops the loss of proteins, protects neurons and improves motor functions.
