Maksimovic cost Napoli £20million when he made the move from Torino in the summer of 2016, but he spent most of the season on the bench.

Things haven’t improved much this season, where he has started just two games in all competitions.

And now should Napoli seek to cut their losses early doors, Football Italia reports that Arsenal could well make their move.

Maksimovic started off his career in Serbia with Sloboda Uzice before making a £200,000 move to Red Star Belgrade.

He joined Torino in 2013 and made 66 appearances for the club before his big-money move to Napoli.

And should Wenger snap up Maksimovic, he could be the long-term plan at centre-half alongside Calum Chambers.

SunSport reported yesterday how the 22-year-old, who joined from Southampton in the summer of 2014, has committed himself to the Gunners until 2021.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to Calum’s continued contribution to the club.”

And Chambers wrote of his delight at signing a new deal on Twitter.

He said: "Proud to sign a new contract with Arsenal.

"I know I'm still a young player and I want to have my best years playing for this football club.

"I want to win as many trophies with Arsenal as possible.

"I'm going to repay the fans for the faith they have shown in me.

"Can't wait to get going again."

Arsenal transfer news: Man City star Raheem Sterling reveals he never thought about swapping the Etihad for the Emirates

Arsene Wenger enquired over the availability of the ex-Liverpool star, but Pep Guardiola refused to part ways with the England international.

With no possible trade in the pipelines, City launched a £60million offer for the Chilean maestro, which was swiftly rejected.

And speaking ahead of the Champions League group stage clash with Napoli, Sterling told reporters he never paid attention to media speculation regarding his future.

He said: “I didn’t need to speak with him (Guardiola), because I had already spoken to him during the summer about pre-season.

“I didn’t have any negative thoughts or anything bad about it.

“I just woke up one day with England and saw it, and I didn’t believe a word of it until I heard something from the manager – then I would believe it.

“It wasn’t something I was worried about because Pep is an honest guy, and he would have spoken to me about it before that.

“So, I didn’t need to worry about it, and I didn’t think about it, not for one minute.”

Guardiola’s decision to keep Sterling in Eastlands has been vindicated, as the Jamaican-born ace has started the season in blistering fashion.

He has already netted on seven occasions in just ten games for City – closing in on his highest tally for a single season – which currently stands at 11 goals.

And Sterling has heaped praise on his manager, he said: “He’s been massive for me, especially with the simple stuff.

“He always tries to get you to do the simple stuff at the top level and that is the real genius thing about him.

"He makes sure you do the simple things and it works."

And the former Golden Boy winner commented he is no rush to move on from City, he added: "I signed for five years here.

"I've got two-and-a-half years left, and I see myself here and playing my football here under a great manager with a great team."

Henderson, who has shone for Shrewsbury Town on loan so far this campaign, is now starting to attract attention from big guns at home and abroad.

United’s Premier League rivals Arsenal are closely monitoring his situation as they plot a swoop for the soon-to-be out of contract ace.

The Gunners would have to pay a compensation fee for the starlet, but they could be pipped to his signature by Benfica.

The Portuguese giants, who signed fellow Three Lions youth star Chris Willock from the North London side this summer, are also keen on Henderson.

And they would be able to get him on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling due to being a foreign club.

The powerhouses are not the only ones trying to bag the services of the youngster.

A host of Championship sides would also love to recruit him.

And after tasting senior football firstly at Grimsby last season and with the Shrews this campaign, Henderson does not want to go back playing youth football.

He is believed to be seeking clear assurance from Jose Mourinho and the Red Devils’ hierarchy that he has a clear path to the first-team in the North West.

But if that cannot be guaranteed then he is ready to take the brave move and leave United in order to help his progression and development.

Henderson is currently with the Young Lions squad and helped his country to U20 World Cup joy in June.

He was been in outstanding form for table-topping Shrewsbury and helped them to break a club record by going the first eleven games of the campaign unbeaten.

The shotstopper has kept five clean sheets for the League One leaders in his 11 matches for the club.

That adds to the four shut-outs out of seven he recorded while on loan at Grimsby at the back end of the last campaign.

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN are still hoping to recruit Alexis Sanchez on a free next summer – and will be happy to sacrifice Edinson Cavani to do so.

According to Le Parisien, his arrival could lead to Cavani’s departure next summer.

PSG have been working on a deal for Sanchez since last summer, but they decided to focus their efforts on a blockbuster move for Kylian Mbappe, to back-up their incredible world record swoop for Neymar.

And the Brazilian had a rift with Uruguayan team-mate Cavani a few weeks ago, when the pair argued who should take set pieces.

Despite spending obscene amounts of money on £195million Neymar and deferring a £180m fee for Mbappe till next summer, PSG are keen to recoup some funds for Cavani.

The former Napoli striker will be 31 in February and has bagged 11 goals in all competitions for PSG so far this season.

After the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Manchester United on a free in 2016, Cavani was given free reign to run the front line.

But last season was a huge disappointment for PSG, who were shockingly knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona in the most remarkable second-leg comeback in the competition’s history.

And they were then beaten to the Ligue 1 title by Mbappe and Monaco, who scored almost at will as they romped to the title.

PSG signed Cavani from Napoli for £55m in 2013 and would hope to recoup much of that fee, therefore balancing their books ahead of any Financial Fair Play penalties.

Either way the move should show that the French capital club are thinking hard about FFP with a Uefa investigation into their dealing still on-going.
