ARSENAL are set to make a January transfer move for Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic, according to reports.
But Arsene Wenger could have competition for the Serbian international as Serie A outfit Inter Milan are also sniffing around.
Maksimovic cost Napoli £20million when he made the move from Torino in the summer of 2016, but he spent most of the season on the bench.
Things haven’t improved much this season, where he has started just two games in all competitions.
And now should Napoli seek to cut their losses early doors, Football Italia reports that Arsenal could well make their move.
Maksimovic started off his career in Serbia with Sloboda Uzice before making a £200,000 move to Red Star Belgrade.
He joined Torino in 2013 and made 66 appearances for the club before his big-money move to Napoli.
And should Wenger snap up Maksimovic, he could be the long-term plan at centre-half alongside Calum Chambers.
SunSport reported yesterday how the 22-year-old, who joined from Southampton in the summer of 2014, has committed himself to the Gunners until 2021.
A statement on the club’s official website read: “Everyone at Arsenal is looking forward to Calum’s continued contribution to the club.”

ARSENAL have not given up hope of persuading Mesut Ozil to sign a new deal before January.
The World Cup winner is out of contract next summer, and free to leave on a free transfer.
Arsene Wenger’s men were understood to have given up on the 29-year-old, and resigned to him leaving the Emirates.
But there is still hope he may yet stay and pen a new deal – expected to be for three-years – before the end of the month.
Emirates insiders have suggested a stunning breakthrough in negotiations is “very, very close.”
It is thought he wants a huge boost on his £140,000-a-week wages, along with a hefty signing-on bonus.
However, if terms are not struck before the January transfer window opens, Arsenal will look to cut their loses.
Manchester United are one of the clubs interested, but Emirates chiefs are reluctant to sell to a league rival.

ARSENAL have confirmed the appointment of Sven Mislintat as their new head of recruitment.
Current chief scout Steve Rowley has stood down after 25 years’ service and the Gunners have acted fast to bring in his replacement.
According to Sport Bild, Arsenal will pay Borussia Dortmund around £1.8million for the 45-year-old super scout – dubbed ‘Diamond Eye’.
In a statement, the Gunners were quick to point out Mislintat “is credited with creating the pipeline of young talent at Dortmund which has produced the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Shinji Kagawa and Ousmane Dembele.”
Arsene Wenger added: “We are delighted that Sven is joining us. Identifying and developing talent is a core part of our philosophy and Sven has an outstanding track record over many years.
“We would like to thank Steve Rowley for all his hard work over many years for the club.
“He has been a key figure in our recruitment of so many top players and has travelled thousands and thousands of miles, watching hundreds of games for us during his time at the club. We wish him well for the future.”
Mislintat had a contract at Signal Iduna Park until 2021, and had been with the club since 2007.
He has also been credited for the discovery and signing of Robert Lewandowski from Lech Poznan.
Bild also report that Bayern Munich were keen on nabbing Mislintat, but he will not be the latest star to move to their rivals.
Lewandowski, Mats Hummels and Mario Gotze have all made the switch to the Allianz Arena in recent years, though Gotze has since returned to Dortmund.
Mislintat’s signing comes after a fantastic weekend for Arsenal fans, after Arsene Wenger’s men beat rivals Tottenham 2-0 at the Emirates on Sunday.
And with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil’s future still unclear, Mislintat will have an influence on the Gunners’ business in January.
