Anne, from a Catholic family, tells a BBC2 documentary to mark 50 years since the 1967 Abortion Act: “I was terrified, confused, very, very lonely. I didn’t think I could talk to anyone.

“It was a really isolated place. The only way I felt I could go through with an abortion is that if I didn’t think about it.”

Anne, then newly married, adds: “It was like someone who was shutting their eyes and jumping from a cliff.

“What I remember is unexpectedly the most terrible black doom came over me and it lasted for months. I was ashamed of what I’d done and I felt so depressed.”

THE BBC’s answer to Bake Off – which was poached by Channel 4 – The Big Family Cooking Showdown continues TONIGHT.

Here is all you need to know about the show and its judges – which include a former Bake Off winner and a Strictly favourite…

The Big Family Cooking Showdown airs on BBC2

What is The Big Family Cooking Showdown and when can I watch it?

The sixth episode of the new series airs on Thursday, September 21 at 8pm on BBC Two.

It goes head-to-head with Without Limits: Vietnam on BBC One, Emmerdale on ITV, The Supervet on Channel 4 and Nightmare Tenants, Slum Landlords on Channel 5

The Big Family Cooking Showdown is the new BBC Two cooking contest which is replacing The Great British Bake Off, which moved to Channel 4.

In the 12-part series, 16 families will welcome cameramen into their own kitchens to whip up dishes using their favourite family recipes.

Challenges will be set in both the studio kitchen and homes up and down the country during the hour-long episodes.

For each task, two families with a passion for all things culinary will face off, with three cooks representing each.

What will the challenges be on The Big Family Cooking Showdown?

Three main rounds feature in the show, and they sound pretty tough.

  • The £10 Challenge – Can the families outdo each other to create the best meal for four on a budget of £10, in just 1hr 15min?
  • Home Visits Challenge – Both families are tasked with cooking a main course for the two judges in just 90 minutes.
  • Impress The Neighbours Challenge – In the studio, both families battle it out to create a winning starter and main in 2h15min.

These challenges play out over eight heats, before there are three semi-finals and one grand final.

Who’s hosting The Big Family Cooking Showdown?

BBC favourite Zoe Ball and former Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain having taken up hosting duties for the series.

Speaking about her new job, Nadiya said: “Family and food have always gone hand in hand and I’m looking forward to getting to know the recipes and traditions of the different families taking part.

“Having been through a food competition as an amateur cook myself, I know exactly how tough it can get and so I’ll be there for them, alongside Zoe, as the pressure really builds!”

Zoe added: “I’m not the world’s best cook as my kids will vouch but I’m learning so much from these families and from Nadiya! New recipes, top tips and some definite dos and don’ts, I can’t wait to share this joyous celebration of family and cooking with everybody.”

BBC bosses reckon that pairing the show’s 2015 champ with TV favourite Zoe will prove a winning formula.

Unfortunately, however, grieving Zoe Ball has pulled out of filming the final after the death of lover Billy Yates.

A source said: “Everyone understands Zoe’s predicament and there’s real sympathy for her.

“But her absence in the final is a blow for the debut series.”

Who are the judges on The Big Family Cooking Showdown?

Nadiya and Zoe will be joined by chefs Rosemary Shrager, 66, and Giorgio Locatelli, 53.

They will set challenges to find Britain’s best amateur home cook.

They will then judge who is the best, before crowning a winner.

Will Mary Berry be on The Big Family Cooking Showdown?

Veteran judge Mary Berry, 81, will not be involved.

The baking goddess is reportedly involved in other projects.

She made the decision to quit the Great British Bake Off after it moved to Channel 4.
